About this Item
Now seldom seen complete official 1965 Monaco Grand Prix program, 68 pages, approximately 24cm x 16cm with gloss heavy card cover in an opulent full colour design and patronized by the royal family who were photographed with their children, the young Prince Albert, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie.
The program is designed to convey a luxury appeal, containing alcohol, spirits and sports car advertising from marques such as Ferrari, Maserati, BMW and Auto Union as well as H.G. Wright & Sons who were specialist British motor dealers in Monte Carlo for Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and Daimler.
Ferrari were promoting their new Ferrari 275 GT and its Spyder incarnation and Porsche were advertising their new Porsche 911 which had been made public on 12th September 1963 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. The first 911's had reached customers in late 1964 and began export to the US in February 1965.
The 1965 Monaco Grand Prix grid was limited to 16 cars due to entry rules set by the Automobile Club de Monaco at the time.
In protest, Team Lotus owner Colin Chapman withdrew the entire team from the event, focusing its efforts on the Indianapolis 500, which Jim Clark would go on to win the following day.
The race itself was most notable for Graham Hill's remarkable recovery drive to secure his third consecutive victory in the principality, and a spectacular accident where Paul Hawkins crashed into the harbour.
After starting from pole, Hill was forced down an escape road on lap 25 to avoid a slow back marker. He rejoined the race in 5th place, broke the lap record several times during his comeback and eventually regained the lead to win by over a minute. This feat contributing to his nickname, "Mr. Monaco".
On lap 79, Australian driver Paul Hawkins spun his Lotus at the chicane and crashed into the Mediterranean. He escaped unhurt and became only the second driver to ever land in the harbour during the Grand Prix, ten years after Alberto Ascari did so in 1955.
Jackie Stewart earned his first career podium, finishing 3rd with future World Champion Denny Hulme making his Formula One debut, finishing 8th.
