Grade 4-6-- Similar to Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, the Three Investigators are featured in newer, slicker, more '80s-style adventures. Funny Business is set against the backdrop of a high-powered comics convention. When some valuable comic books disappear, the threesome discover just how serious and cutthroat the comics business can be. In Rough Stuff, the Investigators' small private plane crashes in the mountains, far from civilization. When the pilot (and father of one of the Three Investigators) mysteriously disappears, the teens go exploring and discover an isolated Indian Village. Of the two, Funny Business is somewhat less predictable, and it features a nice twist in which the pudgy, girl-shy Jupe Jones finally finds romance. In both novels, the characters are rather stereotyped, including the Three Investigators themselves: brainy Jupe, athletic Pete, and good-looking Bob. Still, the characters are appealing, and there is plenty of action.
