Works shown, planned and painted especially for this exhibition by A.R. Penck, relate spontaneously to the rooms of Kunsthalle Bern as a field of action. Five thematic groups of paintings give the exhibition a plan of development, and provide an experience for the visitor, who has the possibility of reacting, comprehending, answering, and even of exercising personal judgment. These works, painted with very simple means and minimal expense, derive from paintings of the Stone Age and demonstrate a new degree of abstraction. Penck's new dimension contains sequences of ideas and emotions. The irrational and the relationship of man to his work are used to illuminate, but not to explicate, the disappointment of modern life.
