An associate of fellow artists Alan Odle and Harry Clarke, whose work appeared beside his at a 1925 exhibition at St George's Gallery, Austen illustrated a range of notable titles, including those by Shakespeare, Byron, Jane Austen and Dickens. Externally, smart with slight sunning along the spine, further marking and discolouration to the boards and mild shelf wear, leading to slight curling of the boards and loss of cloth to the spine tips. Dust wrapper visibly torn and fragile, exhibiting notable chips to the spine and rear cover. Reasonable spotting, marking and age toning, as can be expected for an example of this age.
