BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo, 138 pgs, 30 plates, including the two folding; bugle calls. Original brown stamped cloth with gilt flag on cover, gilt titled spine. Yellow endpapers. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Gilt is bright, light cover rubbing. Interior pages are clean and tight. Some evidence of glue on front free endpaper. Overall remarkable condition. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This manual, Abstract of Infantry Tactics , published in 1829, provided instructions for training noncommissioned officers. The purpose of this instruction was to ensure that all NCOs possessed an accurate knowledge of the exercise and use of their firelocks, of the manual exercise of the soldier, and of the firings and marching. Field officers and the adjutant were required to assemble noncommissioned officers frequently for both practical and theoretical instruction. Field officers were to ensure that company officers provided proper instruction to their noncommissioned officers. First edition. First Edition. Full Leather. 138pp. Illustrated throughout with diagrams and drawings, including 2 folding plates. "Published by the Department of War, under the Authority of an Act of Congress of the 2d of March, 1829." Prepared and issued "to secure uniformity of instruction and practice between the infantry of the militia and that of the regular army". "The Abstract.is deemed complete within itself for the instruction of any corps less than a brigade". This detailed work is divided into 4 primary sections: School of the Soldier, School of the Company, School of the Battalion, Exercises and Maneuvers for Light-Infantry and Riflemen, and Parade and Review. Loss of the corner of pages 135 & 136 with the loss of a portion of 6 lines of text. Light damp staining to endpapers and light-moderate foxing throughout.
