The important short-sea route between Liverpool and Belfast was largely the preserve of the Belfast Steamship Company, and the formation and development of this company forms the central theme of this book. This is no narrow history of a shipping company, however, but a work which blends personalities, business and commercial interests, the ships and their careers, in conjunction with those of the competition and in a way which is balanced evenly over the whole spectrum of the company's operation. Across the Irish Sea provides a real insight into the complicated world of shipping, particularly since the war, when conflicting commercial interests, trading problems, uncertain management decisions, take-overs and fierce competition have characterised the latter years of the company; its association with the Coast Lines group and, later, P & O, is also covered. With its varied collection of photographs, its fleet list and its highly readable text, "Across the Irish Sea" is a delight for the shipping enthusiast as well as an important document for the historian.
