This volume collects the first laws of Utah Territory, established by Mormon settlers as the State of Deseret in 1849 and organized as Utah Territory by the Federal government in 1850. Contains acts and laws of Deseret, 1850-1855, while Brigham Young was Governor of the State of Deseret. The laws of the fourth annual session were not printed separately; they only appeared in this compilation. Topics of laws (with punishments) include: gambling; gunpowder; kidnapping; lewdness; enticing a female to house of ill fame; etc. Also covered are many non-criminal activities such as: free schools; roads and bridges; ferries; cutting timber; land and water grants for Brigham Young, etc. It also contains the first published versions of the constitution of the State of Deseret and the 1851 Ordinances of General Assembly.
