BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 74 pgs. Portrait frontis and plate. Rhode Island Soldiers and Sailors Historical Society, Series 5, #3. Original green printed wrappers. Limited to 250 copies. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor rubbing to edges; printed wrappers lightly soiled. Interior is clean and tight. Overall, near fine. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author was in Company E, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. He, along with others of his company, was captured while on picket duty on the Orange plank road, near Parker's store in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on November 29, 1863. Smith here tells his personal story of captivity, escape and his journey, mostly by water, to reconnect with Federal troops in Pensacola. REFERENCE: DORN MA 56.
