Chanes, codirector for domestic concerns for the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, has here brought together 20 thoughtful and provocative articles that discuss anti-Semitism in the U.S. from varying points of view. Several are carefully researched scholarly pieces, including professor Jack Wertheimer's history of U.S. anti-Semitism and an evaluation of the statistical tools used to measure it by Dr. Renae Cohen. Others deal with contemporary issues, such as feminist Letty Cottin Pogrebin's controversial study of anti-Semitism in the women's movement, a lengthy examination of anti-Semitism on college campuses, far-right "hate" groups and the Holocaust denial movement. While Gary Rubin, director of Americans for Peace Now, argues that anti-Semitism in the African American community is best fought by Jews taking an activist role in solving domestic social problems, sociologist Jonathan Rieder sees black hostility toward Jews as indicative of the growing ethnic warfare in U.S. society.
