Indiana-born journalist, Clarence Joseph Billiet (1883 - 1952), with a most diverse educational background, began his newspaper career w/the Louisville Herald, then joined the Indianapolis Star as a police reporter to become its drama critic. From 1924 to his death in 1952, Bulliet was the most important art critic in Chicago. His judgments are admirable. Here's an quote: "Matisse and Picasso are the two painters since Cezanne of assured position high in the Pantheon of the Modern Renaissance - the greatest movement in art history since the Italian awakening. Gauguin, Van Gogh and Renoir were contemporaries of the arch revolutionist of Aix."
