1 1/2" x 6 3/4" yellow paper stock, printed one-side only in black and illustrated with an engraved train vignette. Ticket reads "Seat to City Point, 1854." Unused, printed ticket issued by the Appomattox Railroad Company for the short, nine-mile ride between City Point, Virginia (now part of the city of Hopewell) and Petersburg, Virginia that would play a crucial role in the Civil War during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864-1865. Established in 1836 under the name City Point Rail Road, it would be reorganized in 1847 as the Appomattox Railroad and later would be acquired by the Southside Railroad in 1854. Appropriately for the times, the ticket had areas for "Mr." and "Seats" left blank for a passenger's name and seat to be filled, with no dedicated "Ms" spot, as unaccompanied Southern ladies did not take the train on their own.
