8vo, (212x145mm) xxvi,187p. 10 photolithograph plates & 51 wood engravings in the text, outer edges slightly dust-soiled. Original purple sand-grain cloth, lettered in gilt, covers slightly soiled, the backstrip faded and corner tips rubbed. (Mejer 1054) The first edition of Zaehnsdorf's classic manual on binding technique. Originally written for the growing band of late-Victorian amateur bookbinders this text enjoyed a considerable sale among professional trade binders, so much so that their needs were recognized in the second edition of 1890, which contained additional material on trade practices.
