Garrett - Telephone Kensington 5233 - [there are some handwritten notes on the back of the compliment slip] - CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket accompanies this book. The dustjacket is complete, with price to inner prelim. Browned in general with age. Lightly soiled to lighter areas, with very small areas of scuffing [mainly corners]. Now housed in a plastic archival sleeve for future protection. [can be removed from the sleeve if you want though]. - Green cloth with golden/gilt title to the spine. Lightening to the cloth on 2mm at the bottom of the front board and spine. Boards are very clean and tightly bound to the inner page block. Has retained such a good condition because it has always been housed by the original dustjacket. The complimentary slip is laid in. [images show you the slip] - There was also a few pages of handwritten notes, which were written by a critic. - It starts: There can be no objection to the economy of it's style, in which Atkins to Maupassant; alert, brisk and readable - it is the fact that the style is prefabricated to obtain a startling impression. By a wholly unsubstantial view of ????????? and ?????? - a view more difficult for the English reader to see through, distracted as he is by the piquancy of the Yankee edge. Let us face it the dialogue that Hemingway has ????? is farcical - to see it we must imagine the equivalent of a Bertie Wooster, torn out of his time and into the ???? of spivdom, the very sort of Englishman we see in "?????" except that this is EH the authors conscious view of an authoritative Englishman. Émile Faguet [critic Paris University] - Maupassant: "a coarse brute without brains". - [end of handwritten pages] - There is some browning and foxing throughout the book. There are several photographic images of Ernest Hemingway to accompany his life story. There are 245 pages and apart from the foxing and browning, they are all present and tightly bound.
