Smith, a native of Prattville, Alabama but an early settler of Birmingham (at the behest of Henry DeBardeleben), was associated with Pratt Coal & Coke Company (late Pratt Coal & Iron Company), the Continental Gin Company (Smith was an early resident of what is now Avondale), and the Birmingham Trust & Savings Company. He was an early investor in the old Blount Springs Resort community north of Birmingham; and was a longtime member of Avondale Methodist Church.
