Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Pp 88 + a few halftone photo illustrations, clothbound. Lacks the original dust jacket, else near fine, tight copy; neatly signed and inscribed by the son of the subject of the book to another family member. The elder Smith was involved in nearly every important thing Birmingham from the very earliest 1870s when the city was founded. A native of Prattville, Alabama, he learned the coal business from Henry deBardeleben; in 1873 deBardeleben moved to Oxmoor, Alabama to take over active management of the Red Mountain Iron and Coal Company; young Smith moved with the deBardelebens and lived with the family in Oxmoor. Later he also became associated with Thomas Aldrich and Col. James Sloss; later he was associated with the Continental Gin Company and with the Birmingham Trust and Savings Company. Sulzby gives a full account of Smith's interests with those two important companies. There is also good material on Smith's 1880s interest in the Blount Springs Resort in Blount County, Alabama. Vitally important early Birmingham history.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Pp 88, bound in original red cloth; near fine in VG dust jacket. Smith, a native of Prattville, Alabama but an early settler of Birmingham (at the behest of Henry DeBardeleben), was associated with Pratt Coal & Coke Company (late Pratt Coal & Iron Company), the Continental Gin Company (Smith was an early resident of what is now Avondale), and the Birmingham Trust & Savings Company. He was an early investor in the old Blount Springs Resort community north of Birmingham; and was a longtime member of Avondale Methodist Church. A good biography and one of the scarcest of Jim Sulzby's books.
