Collected from the Observation at leisure times, of above Thirty years; by J. GOAD. Followed by some quotes from the Bible. FIRST EDITION 1686. Folio approximately 300 x 180 mm, 11¾ x 7½ inches, text illustration on page 75, pages: [8], 350, 347-478, 489-509, [8] - Recognition, Errata and 5 pages of books sold by Obadiah Blagrave, some erratic numbering in places, collation and all catchwords correct, bound in contemporary calf, rebacked in modern calf, black gilt lettered label to spine, original endpapers. Engraved bookplate of JOHN CAMPBELL, fourth Earl of Loudoun (1705--82; commander-in-chief in America, 1756--58). Binding rubbed and scuffed, shelf wear to edges, corners worn with loss of leather and board at tips, slight pale browning to edges of title page and last advert page, strip of browning to edges of pastedowns, front and rear, endpapers in poor condition, pale browning and spotting to pages 443-446, occasional pale spot or stain, tiny hole to 1 page, affecting 2 letters, 2 corners torn with loss, not near text, 4 tips of corners missing, several minor tears to margins, not near text, a few pages slightly ragged at outer edge, not affecting text. A good copy. A letter in the National Archives of Washington is addressed by George Washington to John Campbell, Earl of Loudoun, 10 January 1757, a previous owner of this book, as follows: "General, and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's Forces in North America. and Governor, and Commander in Chief of His Majesty's most Ancient Colony and Dominion of Virginia".
