Francis Rufus Bellamy (December 24, 1886 New Rochelle, New York – February 1972) was an American writer and editor. Bellamy was editor of The Outlook from 1927 to 1932, and was executive editor of The New Yorker in 1933. He was editor of Fiction Parade from 1935 to 1938, and became editor of Scribner's Commentator in 1939. He became president of University Publishers Inc. in 1958. Murray Leinster (was a pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins (June 16, 1896 – June 8, 1975), an American writer of genre fiction, particularly of science fiction. He wrote and published more than 1,500 short stories and articles, 14 movie scripts, and hundreds of radio scripts and television plays. He began a career as a freelance writer before World War I. He was just 20 when his first story, "The Anti-Climax", appeared in the July 1916 issue of H. L. Mencken's literary magazine The Smart Set. Over the next two years, Leinster published four more stories and almost a dozen sketches in the magazine; in a September 2022 interview, Leinster's daughter stated that Mencken recommended the use of a pseudonym for non-Smart Set content. During WWI, Leinster served with the Committee of Public Information and the United States Army (1917–1918). During and after the war, his work began appearing in magazines like Argosy, Snappy Stories, and Breezy Stories. He continued to be published regularly in Argosy into the 1950s. During WWII, he served in the Office of War Information. Atta: A Novel of a Most Extraordinary Adventure is a science fiction novel by Francis Rufus Bellamy published in 1953. In 1954 the novel was published back-to-back with Murray Leinster's The Brain Stealers as Ace Double D-079. Atta is a Robinson Crusoe-like tale of a man who is hit by lightning and wakes up, to find himself half an inch tall. He befriends a talking warrior ant named Atta and has many adventures. At the end of the novel, Atta dies, and the man returns to normal size. The Brain-Stealers is a novel set in a future society where "Security" is a paramount concern, leading to the suppression of science and culture. The plot unfolds when a spaceship carrying selfish, sharp-toothed, and mentally powerful aliens lands on Earth, beginning to enslave the human population. The hero is an escaped scientist with expertise in thought-projection who becomes a central figure in the fight for freedom against the alien oppressors. James Hunt was an important scientist on the run from the Security Police because of his unauthorized experiments. But he was to be far more important than either he, or his pursuers, could know. For they had arrived; secretly, in out of the way places--and they had begun their program of turning human beings into mindless puppets. . . . Neither side realized it, but Jim Hunt was humanity's last hope for survival. Presumed First Edition this publisher, Presumed First printing thus.…
