Item description from seller

Scarce first printing of this Dutch edition of PINOCCHIO, illustrated by one of the most significant children's book artists of the interwar years. Rie Cramer is widely regarded as one of "de bekendste vrouwen van de Nederlandse boekillustratie" ["the most famous women in Dutch book illustration"] (Groot, 307), drawing comparisons to Aubrey Beardsley and Edmund Dulac. Her work for this Dutch translation of the beloved puppet story shows her fully developed aesthetic. This edition of PINOCCHIO is notably scarce on the market and institutionally, especially in the original dust jacket; OCLC locates only seven holdings, six of which are in the Netherlands and none of which are in the US. An attractive copy. 10'' x 6.75''. Original yellow pictorial cloth binding. Original unclipped (no price) pictorial dust jacket. Green endpapers. Color pictorial frontispiece with three color plates and black-and-white in-text illustrations. 174 pages. Jacket with some edgewear, a few tiny closed tears; small hole to rear joint, partly closed with tape repair to verso. Binding with faint evidence of dampstaining to boards. Interior clean and bright. Very good in very good dust jacket.
