This March 7, 1861 issue of the Bennington Banner features a long and detailed inside-page headline report on the inauguration as well as a complete printing of Lincoln's first Inaugural address. "In his First Inaugural Address, delivered on March 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln focused on preserving the Union and averting civil war. He emphasized the importance of the Constitution and the Union's unbroken continuity, promising to uphold federal laws in all states. Lincoln also reassured the South that he had no intention of interfering with slavery in states where it existed. He appealed to the "better angels of our nature" and the "mystic chords of memory" to foster reconciliation and prevent bloodshed. "Lincoln stressed the importance of the Union and his commitment to upholding federal laws. He argued that secession was a violation of the Constitution and that the Union was unbroken. Lincoln explicitly stated his intention not to interfere with slavery in states where it existed, a point designed to reassure the Southern states. He used language that aimed to create a sense of unity and prevent further conflict.
