8vo, pp xxxi, [1], 267, [1], 55, [7], portrait frontispiece, bound in contemporary panelled calf, spine with raised bands and red labels, joints lightly cracked but sound, light browning to text but a very good copy, FIRST EDITION, sole London printing of this postumous work by the 'Pious Robert Nelson' as he was called, Jacobite supporter and non-juror, cheifly rememberd today for his devotional writings late in life. This work was edited after his death by his friend Lee, who was given the manuscript by Nelson on his deathbed. In it Nelson formulates the first real ralionale of charity, not as a discretionary gift to society but a duty and moral obligation. Nelson was oassociated with many of the chirtable societies of the time. In the words of his Victorian biographer 'Nelson endevoured to enlist the sympathies of the rich and noble, with whom he was in the habit of associating, in behalf of those children of poverty for whom he lived.' The work suggests the endowment of colleges, homes for the elderly, schools, and hospitals, and includes an appendix of works carried into operation. Appropriately for a work directed at the British aristocracy, this copy bears the bookplate of one of the several Earls of Suffolk and Berkshire [ Howard family].
