He was originally created by Mary Tourtel, in order to win sales for the Daily Express from its rivals, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail.Featuring ten tales, including 'Rupert and the Black Cat' and 'Rupert and the Paper Kettle'.Illustrated throughout in colour.Authored and illustrated by Alfred Bestall, who took over from Mary Tourtel in 1935.With the former owner's inscription of M H Hardy to the first leaf, and with the tails of the first two leaves clipped. In the publisher's original paper covered wraps. Light spotting to front wrap, with faint handling marks to rear wrap. Minor closed tear to back strip tail. Tail of first two leaves clipped.
