Interesting articles include the current condition of Liberia, "Our Free People of Color," "African Slave Trade," the plight of the Congo, "African Slave Trade from New York," "Russian Emancipation," "Dreadful Sufferings Caused by the Slave Trade," "A View of Our Country by an African Missionary," Appeals to the Free colored populations of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, etc. The American Colonization Society was established to encourage and support migration of free African-Americans to Africa. The Society was instrumental in the establishment of Liberia, where more than 13000 freed African Americans emigrated. The advent of the Civil War undermined the Society's aims, as newly freed blacks did not wish to emigrate to Africa and the Society ceased operations for a time. Interestingly, the end of Reconstruction in the South later created renewed interest in African migration and an additional 2000 African Americans emigrated post-civil war.…
