Accomplished, acerbic and one-liner-witty, this is nonetheless a novel whose huge and handsome cast, complex plot ting and terribly clever dialogue keep the reader at a distance.

The shop is named after Wadard, one of Farningham's Domesday landlords, a henchman of Bishop Odo, William the Conquerers brother,and featured on the Bayeaux tapestry.
