Provides instructions for a variety of experiments that show the chemical and physical characteristics of gases
Gr 5-8--By doing the 16 projects in each of these titles, students can learn about gases, solids, and liquids--their structure, properties, and importance. Activities explore the scientific principles behind a carbon-dioxide fire extinguisher, why ice floats, how bleach whitens clothes, how a liquid crystal display on a digital watch works, and more. Each experiment includes a list of materials and equipment (which are readily available), procedures, and a discussion of expected results and related information. Black-and-white and full-color diagrams illustrate procedural details and clarify explanations. Icons at the beginning of each activity identify the important concepts involved: matter, energy, light, heat, sound, and electricity. A warning symbol, followed by ``Alert! Adult supervision needed,'' appears at the beginning of some experiments. Specific safety instructions in bold print are also included. Solid series entries.
