First edition. Cloth-backed pictorial boards, reproducing a drawing by the author. Edgell Rickword's copy, with his ownership signature to free endpaper. Spine slightly faded and soiled, boards slightly dust-soiled, corners chafed, else a good copy. The author's semi-autobiographical first novel, written between the ages of eighteen and twenty. According to his biographer, it had originally taken the form of a journal but was eewritten as a work of fiction at the recommendation of Rickword and his co-director at Wishart, Douglas Garman. A reflective novel following the love affair between a young man and woman.Barker was a poet who identified with the New Apocalyptics movement. He has a long affair with Elizabeth Smart, who immortalised their liaison in her novel 'By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept'. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. Light handling marks to the boards. Spine is faded. Light rubbing to the extremities. Spots to the fore edge. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Dust wrapper is edge worn, with small chips and closed tears, including a tear to the tail of the rear joint, and to the head of the front wrap. Spine and extremities are age-toned. Handling marks and spots to the wraps. Spots to the reverse of the dust wrapper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with scattered spots. Very Good. book.
