Alcoholic Woman (Original Text Later Appearing in AA Big Book)

First edition, first printing (PBO) of Ruth M. Walsh's Alcoholic Woman, a mid-century novel based on a true story of a woman's struggles with alcoholism and accompanying promiscuity. Beacon B229. ("Walsh" aka "Welsh"). Notably, the text of this story was reprinted in the 2nd and 3rd editions of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Big Book, as an objective representation of a woman's road to recovery. The 4th edition replaced it with a more contemporary experience. The statement at the top of the front panel ("Drink Turned Her Into a Sex-Crazed Animal") presumably was a publisher's hook to the reader, implying an erotically salacious account, that is, anything but a straightforward testimonial. Back panel blurbs reinforce this. Scarce in commerce. Three copies only held by libraries in WorldCat Library database. 190 pp. plus two pages of publisher's ads at back. Tight, unmarked copy with minimal shelf wear, small corner crease to top of front panel and very faint vertical crease to middle of front panel and very light creasing to spine panel. Internals with moderate age toning. A presentable copy of an important but nearly forgotten AA collectible. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request.
