About this Item

This is a possibly unique artifact of World War II, an original musical production script from a British prisoner of war pantomime, inscribed from the producer to the scriptwriter. The credits list a "G. Place", likely Godfrey Place, commander of Submarine X7 which took part in the 1943 attack on the warship Tirpitz, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He had been captured shortly after the attack on the Tirpitz. The inscription reads "Charles a momento of rough passage with Houston (bald headed old - !). Frank C. Hamel. Christmas 1944". There are pencil annotations throughout. The pages, being typed on less than first quality paper, show age darkening around the edges. It appears that it was likely bound after the war, with brown cloth boards and white cloth spine and marbled endpapers. There is a typed title label on the spine, "P. O. W. Pantomime "Ali Goes to Town" Christmas 1944. Marlag, Germany", folio. Marlag und Milag Nord was a WWII German prisoner of war camp complex for men of the British and Canadian Merchant Navy and Royal Navy. It was located about 30 km northeast of Bremen. . FO.
