"This book is partly based upon Roba di Roma, a work written by William Wetmore Story (1819-1895), the American sculptor and poet, and originally published in the year 1863. Roba di Roma has for long been out of print and unprocurable, although it was an admirable book, written by a man of rare culture and charm, who spent forty-six years of his life at Rome. More than a quarter of Story's book has been utilized, but its information has been carefully revised [. . .]" - from Mackinnon's Preface, dated 1926.
