Almost Night

The Everglades, where herons and wood storks roost...the mansions of Biscayne Bay and Coral Gables where the rich and privileged mingle...and the underbelly of a city where crime is an everyday occurrence. They are all part of the Miami that Susannah Cannon knows. Yet even for a seasoned cop, the blood-soaked bed that holds the mutilated corpse of a once-beautiful woman is not a sight she will soon forget.
The death of Carla Reeves, an Orange Bowl Queen turned high-powered advertising executive, is only the first in a series of brutal murders by a serial killer who is targeting lonely, successful women. With the help of her African-American commander, Bea, her Cuban emigre partner, Rafael, and a forensic pathologist named Raja, Susannah investigates a case that is striking in its singularity and in its lack of clues.
As the investigation heats up, sweeping the entire department into a round-the-clock manhunt...as her attraction to emotionally destructive men - including her aloof, troubled lover - makes her dangerously vulnerable, the boundary between her personal and professional lives starts to blur. And Susannah finds herself walking a fine line between love and loss, and life and death.
