This is the uncommon first edition of George Willson's reader that contains selections of both prose and poetry. The author's purpose in preparing these selections seems to have been to help the teacher impart lessons in articulation and elocution to the students as well as comprehension. For example, there are three pages of commonly misprounounced words are in the beginning of the text. There is a previous owner's name in old hand on front end paper. There is also an old dampstain to portion of some pages in rear. It is bound in the original publisher's printed paper covered boards; they are quite worn but still mostly legible--the front cover repeats the title page and the rear cover contains ads for other works by the publisher. The original brown leather spine is in good condition (there are a couple of small holes in the front gutter). The pages are generally bright with an occasional bit of foxing. George Willson also wrote "A practical and theoretical system of arithmetic." which was published by the same publisher; little seems to be known about this author. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 252 pages.
