Full green crushed morocco binding, with gilt lettering and decorations to spine and covers, spine with 2 raised bands; marbled endpapers. Condition of all 3 volumes is virtually pristine, binding rock solid, no visible wear to covers, folding map is perfect as are all pages which constitute these three volumes of over 1400 pages; a most handsome and well cared for set. From Howes B-906: "many later reprints [all omitting the chapter on the Tweed Ring]".and, "Remains the most authoritative study of American political and social institutions." (This edition contains a chapter, "The Tweed Ring in New York City" by Frank Goodnow (v. 3, pages 173-198), that was suppressed in later editions.) Individual volumes subtitled as follows: Volume 1: "The National Government." Volume 2: "The State Governments-The Party System." Volume 3: "Public Opinion-Illustrations and Reflections-Social Institutions." Finally, this is a set with a fascinating association; each volume bears a gift inscription dated Christmas, 1888: "F. W. Rhinelander, from L.R.K, Christmas, 1888." F(rederic). W. Rhinelander was the founding trustee, and later President, of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
