Contemporary calf. 8vo. Spine label. Volume Two only. xvi, 355pp. Illustrated. William Duane was a notable journalist of the early 1800s and a strong supporter of Thomas Jefferson. He was jailed for his criticism of the Federalist Party but acquitted by Jefferson who made him a lieutenant colonel. Duane rose to the rank of adjutant general during the War of 1812. This second volume has sections on light troops, field fortifications, cavalry discipline and tactics, sabre exercises, artillery discipline, batteries, siege artillery and much more. There is a two-page illustration of bugle horn signals and some smaller engravings throughout the text. OCLC notes a separate volume of plates in their description of this item. That is not present here. A good copy in an attractive early binding with light rubbing and wear. The text is good with some scattered foxing and spotting and some light chipping to a few page edges. The front fly and title page lack a 3-inch long section at the top (not affecting any wording). The flyleaf, title and contents pages are stained in the lower corner. Scarce.
