Abandoned by her own mother, Ursula insinuates herself into Iris's affections and heightens an already tense family situation. At the convent, Ursula's knowing gaze provokes nuns and girls alike. She perpetrates sly tricks everywhere and always escapes punishment. Pushed to the limit, Isobel decides to exact her own revenge.

This fine first novel is a moving tale of a young girl growing up in England just after World War II. Isobel, the narrator, is 12 and her sister Caro is ten when they are sent away to a convent boarding school by their abusive mother. Roe perfectly captures Isobel's bewilderment and deeply felt distress at being thrust into an alien environment that is every bit as terrifying to her as her mother's unpredictable behavior. Isobel's love for her mother and her desperate attempts to please her are heartbreakingly portrayed, as is Caro's quiet fury at being forced to convert to Catholicism and her fierce resolution never to forgive those who made that decision for her. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and direct payments via PayPal. If ordering via ABEBooks and not directly through our website, your transaction will be handled by ABEBooks.com according to their payment options and procedures. Most of our books are available only as single copies. Before sending an automatic PayPal payment, it may be advisable to contact us to confirm availability of the book and total cost with shipping. Orders are normally processed and shipped within 24 hours of receipt with the exception of weekends, extremely inclement weather and post office holidays. Our books are packed and boxed with great care, with the rigors of transit, delivery and adverse weather conditions kept in mind. International orders are shipped by Priority Air Mail International or First Class Mail International.
Shipping terms
Domestic orders are sent via Media Mail or Priority Mail. International orders are sent using First Class Mail International (Standard option) or Priority Mail International (Priority option). Shipping rates are determined by method, weight, size of package and geographic destination. Our shipping fees are based on average books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required. To reduce your costs, we will use the more economical flat rate services whenever possible if your order will fit into the required packaging. If eligible for flat rate, we will reduce your shipping fee when accepting your order. However, please be aware many books will NOT be eligible for this option. Where applicable, international customers are responsible for paying any required customs duties, fees and taxes as required by their country.
We want your complete satisfaction. Items may be returned for a refund for any reason. We request that the returned item(s) be in the same condition received, unused and carefully repacked, and for domestic orders returned within 10 business days by an insured or traceable shipping method. Original shipping and handling fees are not refundable. The customer pays for return shipping unless there has been an error on our part. For EU customers, CRD requirements apply for returns. In all cases we do request that you give prior notice by email for any returns. If you have ordered directly from us, your refund will be processed upon arrival and inspection of the returned item.
