No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Special Edition. Reinhardt's own file of 275 documents / c.300 sheets regarding Graham. 91 documents signed by Graham - 21 post cards, 23 ALSs & 46 TLSs, a Memorandum of Agreement, & 83 unsigned letters, in copy, by Reinhardt; letters by others. Owner of Reinhardt Books since 1948, Max, one of the most successful publishers of the C20th, launched himself in the role by buying from Stanley Unwin the renowned Bodley Head, founded by Elkin Matthews and John Lane. One of many strategies to build his list was to win the rights to publish Graham, who gave new novels to Collins and free rein to Max to reissue earlier works and some new books. There's confusion how this began. A convincing case is made by Winstongraham yolasite that Ward Lock, publishers of the first four Poldark novels, had allowed them to languish out of print. So the rights simply reverted to Graham and were his to grant. Max thought them the best in Ward Lock's list and he promoted Poldark, Graham, the films and TV series, around the world. In his memoirs, calling Max his best friend, Graham wrote, "Had the first four Poldarks not been republished by Bodley Head in an attractive new format, they would have been out of print for years and much less likely to have caught the eye of filmmakers". Graham published c.50 books in over 20 languages, including the 12 Poldark novels. Many were filmed such as Hitchcock's Marnie with Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery. Given an OBE, Graham was President of the Royal Society of Literature and Chairman of the Society of Authors. In 2008 his family founded a literary prize in his name. The 1970 BBC series "Poldark" had a peak audience of 14 million (family website). Quite a phenomenon. Letters cover foreign rights, royalties, and the resolution of conflicts. Warm friendship, travel and interests mix with the detailed work, in the unruffled, collaborative, and personal way Max did business, which appealed so much to his authors. But they do not start well - muddles with US publisher, Doubleday, over Night Journey, Forgotten Story, & Take My Life. Max's flexible way of friendly agreement, rather than contracts set in stone, comes unstuck. He forgets rights' percentages; issues "an abject apology" to the fully involved Winston. The Bodley Head's US literary agent, Carol Brandt, gets confused as to who she represents - BH or Graham. The latter apologises to Carol for Max's errors provoking a mayhem of phone calls between them till Max finally sorts it out. But, he prefers Max's "friendly agreements" to hard contracts. "This may not be business-like, but it occurs without hurt to anyone". It left Max free to solve problems, and he appreciates that "in the matter of Take My Life (Max) succeeded when it had appeared completely unplaceable." The next royalty statement showed Max earnt for Graham, in 6 months, £220,000 in today's money. Not bad for a book no one else could place. Postcards reveal humorous challenges to the Reinhardts to join Winston & Jean; comic jibes at the BH; one from India where they woke to find a large monkey eating their bedside fruit; from Mallorca thanking Max for Trevor's short stories, read "with great admiration, but have now returned to Elmore Leonard, who with his shits & fucks, murders & shoot-outs, is so much more jolly". The last letters touch on how the BH, revived and steered so personally by Max for 30 years, was sold to Random House. Having formed a consortium some years before with Chatto, Virago, and Cape, to share costs, his two co-chairmen, "made the deal without consulting me". (Adamson: Max Reinhardt; Palgrave 2009). They show: his strategy to protect Graham from the debacle; a full account of his royalties for the final year; and a last letter shows Max still smarting from the distress, as he began new ventures with Reinhardt Books. Proceeds from this sale will benefit MaxLiteracy, which inspires creative writing in young people, set up in memory of Max and his authors. Signed by Author(s).
