The authors seek to persuade readers to be more compassionate and to work harder toward coming up with solutions and alternatives to animal consumption. The chapters include suggestions, success accounts, addresses to which readers might respond, and sources of further information. A useful debate resource.

This book is aimed at individuals who, while not ready to join the ranks of animal rights activists, share an interest in improving the treatment of animals in our society. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of our lifestyle (eating, dress, education, etc.) and how it affects animal welfare. The information, culled from a variety of pamphlets, brochures, and fact sheets published by animal rights groups, is presented in a simple, concise format. Lists of sources for further information, companies offering "cruelty-free" products, and animal rights organizations by specific interest area are included. While Michael Fox's Inhumane Society ( LJ 8/90) provides a more extensive and philosophical commentary, this book is an inexpensive and worthwhile primer on the subject.
