Synopsis:

Just Another Number is a memoir structured by the first 23 men Maggie Young had sex with. Her story is about how American society curbs women to validate themselves by men. Through her lovers, Maggie relives the toxic and at times, life-threatening situations she endured under that mentality. The book paints a gritty portrait of a Tennessee teen who- in the midst of bulimia and meth abuse- joins the Navy. Just Another Number hops through the various shades of chauvinism in the conservative Bible Belt, the male dominated military, and the superficiality of southern California. Her story is littered with hypocritical Christians, brainwashed warriors, deadbeat band guys, and the spoiled, cocaine snorting trust fund offspring of California’s elite. It also entails child abuse, eating disorders, drug cultures, social media, and military corruption.

About the Author: As a child of the Bible Belt, Maggie Young’s early years were turbulent: riddled with eating disorders, drug use, and toxic relationships. Her escape route was her United States Navy enlistment, catapulting her to San Diego, California where she became one of the first women of a freshly integrated USS Higgins crew. Maggie considers the deeply ingrained misogyny of both southern and military culture to be the foundation of her inspiration and activism. After completing her enlistment, Maggie traded the Navy’s ranks for UC Berkeley. After graduation, she backpacked Europe, was a television reporter in Alaska, and returned her birthplace for a tumultuous era that will be documented in her next book, Tennessee Refugee. Her mission is to expose corruption through a memoir’s emotional authenticity. Although she is an avid world traveler, Maggie is currently based in Los Angeles.
