ORIGINAL ISSUE. First edition (no additional printings listed). Contemporary embossed foliate brown cloth, leather spine label, approximately 5 1/2 x 9 inches, x + 395 pp. Hardcover, very good. Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there and at 2 or 3 spots along edges of boards, spine and margins of boards moderately faded, label scuffed, with a 1/4 inch chip off side edge. Internally, old bookseller's label, J. R. Barnum, Agent, 61 Roosevelt St. , or S. Dando 29 Spruce St. N. Y. (Manhattan) , front hinge starting to crack, foxing on endpapers and less so in-text, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Consists of two pages of recommendations, including one by Mrs (Lydia H. ) Sigourney, followed by essays on various books of the Bible, human nature, the divinity of Christ, the Trinity, Resurrection, etc, concluding with "Substance of a Discourse Preached in the First Baptist Meeting House in Hartford, on the Fourth of July, 1835" in which he essentially sees the United States as a specially chosen nation, far superior to ancient Israel, noting the quality and abundance of the wheat crop, extent of territory, literature, education of women, religion, and so forth.
