Item description from seller

This 1930 early-reader dictionary was designed to accompany the Peter and Peggy primary reading series by Arthur I. Gates and Miriam Blanton Huber, illustrated by Kate Seredy and published by The Macmillan Company. The book functions as a hybrid picture dictionary and controlled-vocabulary reader. Each entry introduces a word, provides an illustration, and uses the word in a simple sentence composed only of previously learned vocabulary. The teacher's introduction explains the pedagogical method: 224 illustrated words; Bold type for words appearing in Peter and Peggy; Italics for dictionary definitions; Capitalization matches first appearance in the main reader; Children are encouraged to use the dictionary independently to build reading fluency. The interior pages show classic 1930s basal-reader design: large serif type, black-and-white line drawings, and tightly controlled phonics progression. Words are grouped alphabetically, each with short declarative sentences and simple illustrations (children, pets, household scenes). This book is part of the broader Work-Play Books series, a well-known early-20th-century reading curriculum used in American primary schools. Copies with intact illustrations and clean pages like this one are scarce since most early educational materials are heavily worn and written in. Softcover edition. 78 pages.
