About this Item
Volume I: [2], 716 pp., / Volume II: [4], 628 pp., Arabic text within borders, paper browned, contemporary quarter calf, rubbed, hinges weak, remainder of title label on spine, occasional soiling, printed in Istanbul, no publisher, 1285 A. H. / 1868. Al-Baydawi was a Muslim scholar, born in Fars, where his father was the chief judge, in the time of the Atabek ruler Abu Bakr ibn Sa?id (1226-60). He himself became judge in Shiraz, and died in Tabriz circa 1286. Many commentaries have been written on Baydawi?s work. He was also the author of several theological treatises. This major work on the Qur?an is largely a condensed and amended edition of al- Zamakhshari?s (al-Kashaf). That work, which displays great learning, suffers from Mu?tazillite views which al-Baydawi tried to amend. It has been edited by Heinrich Fleischer in two volumes (Leipzig, 1846-1848); indices edition by W. Fell, Leipzig, 1878. There are many editions published in the East. A selection of numerous notes was edited by D. S. Margoliouth in "Chrestomathia Beidawiana" (London, 1894). #16429. Seller Inventory # 012584
