"Apples Be Ripe" is a lyrical and provocative novel by Llewelyn Powys that challenges the rigid social and moral conventions of its era. The narrative follows Chris Holbech, a disillusioned schoolmaster who chooses to abandon his stifling, conventional life in favor of a wandering, hedonistic existence in the English countryside. Seeking a more authentic connection to the natural world and the raw sensations of life, Holbech's journey becomes a vibrant celebration of physical existence and a defiant rejection of Victorian asceticism. Powys's prose is celebrated for its earthy vitality and its evocative descriptions of the rural landscape. Through the protagonist's encounters and philosophical reflections, the work explores deep themes of individual freedom, sexual liberation, and the inherent conflict between societal expectations and personal desire. "Apples Be Ripe" stands as a significant contribution to early twentieth-century literature, offering a pagan-like appreciation for the beauty of the earth and a profound meditation on the brevity of human life. This work remains a compelling read for those interested in pastoral fiction and the literary exploration of the human spirit's quest for joy and liberation.
