Norton & Company in 2006. Jeff Brouws's panoramic lens captures the quiet, haunting desolation of the modern American highway and its surrounding commercial ruins. The monograph documents the transformation of the American landscape from local, vernacular roots into a homogeneous, corporate terrain of franchised spaces, discarded sites, and suburban sprawl. Red paper-covered boards with blind-stamped black spine lettering secure the heavy, high-gloss paper stock printed in Italy by Mondadori Printing, Verona. The accompanying photographic dust jacket features a landscape view of Highway 196 in Rowley Junction, Utah, on the front panel and a Minneapolis strip mall parking lot on the rear. William L. Fox contributes a substantial introductory essay analyzing the visual and social realities of de-industrialization. Mondadori Printing in Verona, Italy, executed the color-separation and lithographic printing of the offset-lithographic color plates, capturing the nuanced lighting of night-time parking lots and misty, fog-shrouded roadsides. The academic study of American geography and post-war suburban development finds a visual reference in these pages.…

Evocative images of buildings and places, seen from the American road.
Like many who grew up during the spread of sprawl--with its predictable landscape of housing developments, shopping malls, interstate highways, and big-box construction--acclaimed photographer Jeff Brouws is drawn to places that still embody the vernacular past as well as to those that starkly portray the soulless, franchised American landscape. What began as cultural geography of Main Streets became a visual critique of the myth of upward mobility that created this car-centered, paved-over universe. Some images look outward to the edges of suburbia where sprawl is encroaching upon nature. Others turn inward, documenting the devastated inner cities. All the stunning color photographs reflect the complex beauty and desolation of visual life in our time. 100 color photographs"Synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.

Shipping terms
DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
We offer a choice of media mail (when applicable), first class, priority and/or expedited whenever possible. Choices for shipping methods vary and will appear at checkout (as well as additional opportunities to purchase insurance, extra insurance, etc.). All domestic orders include tracking.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
International shipping has become increasingly complex, but we do our best to keep up. If you have any questions regarding shipping to your country, feel free to reach out before you order. We will do our best to give you an exact quote.
All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
**VAT, Fees & Taxes: **
Where your country requires, and when under the value threshold set by your country, VAT is collected at checkout and remitted by the marketplace you ordered through. Any additional fees, duties, or taxes your country or carrier charges upon arrival are the buyer's responsibility (collected by your postal service or carrier when the package is delivered). The one exception is the European Union (see below).
The European Union:
As of 2026, the EU has added a new customs duty on every parcel entering the Union. Because of this, we are now required to prepay all duty and customs (DDP) before shipping, which is why you may notice that our EU rates run significantly higher than other countries. Additionally, on orders over 150 Euros, the full VAT tax due, over and above €150, is most often not collected by marketplaces at checkout. We may contact you through the marketplace you ordered to collect these additional VAT fees before shipping.
Typical speeds:
Although customs and overseas carrier delays sometimes happen and are outside of our control, the following should be a good guide (Business days only). If you need it faster, feel free to reach out. Sometimes we can achieve the “almost” impossible :)
