An academic review of the topic has it that "In the Hebrew literature of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, the East exerts a romantic fascination, exemplified by the image of the Arab and the Arab world. The short story "New Year for Trees" (1891) by Ze'ev Yavetz introduces a new type of Hebrew youth. Nachman, shedding the traditional image of the pail and frail Jewish yeshiva boy, symbolized the transition from passivity and resignation in the Diaspora. This was replaced by sabra (native-born) assertiveness.
