Arf! Beg! Catch! Dogs From A to Z

A collection of full-color photos captures dogs of all shapes and sizes at play, rest and work in this lively picture book for young children. 35,000 first printing.

PreSchool-Grade 1 This book's subtitle says it all: each of the 26 pages features a photograph of a dog in a pose that suggests a word beginning with that letter of the alphabet. It starts out all right with "arf," "beg," and "catch"; and "itchy," "jump," and "kiss" are okay; but "over" merely shows a pup on its back, "quick," a dog running with a ball in its mouth, and the "x-ray" could be any number of different animals. Yes, the canines are appealing, but there are no people to give balance, and no information on the dogs themselves. The book concludes with a picture of the alphabet in upper and lower case. Kathy Darling's ABC Dogs (Walker, 1997) offers information about canines and has equally great photos. Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City
