G. R. Maurice Maindron. Les Armes [Weapons]. Paris: Ancienne Maison Quantin, 1890, 1st edition, 342 pp. *** A chronological, historical survey of the evolution of weapons and armor in Western civilizations starting with the Stone Ages. Included are numerous small, engraved illustrations numbered so that their descriptions can be found in the text. Bibliographic information is provided at the beginning of each chapter. In back is a list of the most famous arms manufacturers in Europe from the 15th to the 17th centuries with reproductions of their respective marks. The last page has the Table des Matieres. The author was a prominent French naturalist and explorer specializing in entomology (study of insects). Typical of the Victorian Era, he undertook important expeditions to remote corners of the world, including Indonesia, New Guinea, India, and Senegal. He is credited with the discoveries of many new beetle species among other things. This volume is regarded as one of the better works on the history of weapons produced in the latter 19th century. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Red pictorial cloth on both covers and on spine with gilt lettering on front cover and on spine. Light soil and wear. Contents clean and complete in a good binding. VG+ condition. *** 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches.…
