4to, 127pp; pictorial glazed boards. A successful abstract painter in his native England, Harold Cohen (1928-2016) became disillusioned with the art world of London and left for the United States in 1968 to take a teaching position at the University of California, San Diego. There he became involved with a growing community of computer scientists working in the then nascent field of artificial intelligence. A residency at Stanford deepened his connection to the emerging science. Aiming for a program that could conceptualize and realize works of art, Cohen and his collaborators developed AARON, the first AI art-making entity in the 1970s. More than a coloring book, this book includes a substantial interview with Cohen and significant explanations of his methods, along with a generous sampling of computer-art. Laid in is a separately printed prospectus and order form for original drawings by AARON. Cohen's AI-generated art was exhibited widely including at the Brooklyn Muserum, the Tate Gallery, and the Ontario Science Center in Toronto. Most recently, Cohen was the subject of major show at the Whitney Museum in New York in 2024. Fine in a bright dust jacket with a touch of wear at the upper edge of the front panel.
