About this Item
Printed by Hossfeld in Liverpool. 8vo.49pp. Bound in original paper wrappers which have comic drawings on the cover. Illustrated with five black and white drawing reproduced using lithography. They are all in the comic nature , reminiscent of Cruikshank, Jame Ross etc of the 1850 s period. The book is looking at the comic side of contemporary artists who take art very seriously, i.e Whistler, Turner, Etty, Watts etc. The illustrator has remained anonymous. I suspect they were drawn by Prange The book is in a mess. There is some foxing throughout which is heavier on the end papers. ;the paper cover is frayed, soiled with small pieces missing, the stitching is loose, I am unable to guarantee that the book is complete as the copies in COPAC do not mention number of illustrations. However it is very scarce/rare, only a few copies would have been printed and an interesting view point on art of the period.Size 21 x 14cm (8.5 x 5.5 inches)Within the COPAC collection of books, there are only three copies of the book Art Criticism in Three Hours held within British Library collections. None are dated and all have varying dates guessed between 1850-1875. Francis Gerard Prange was the Art manager at The Grafton Galleries in the 1890 s. There are certainly many letters to and from Prange and Whistler in the 1890 s when he was manager at the Grafton Galleries. Previously he appears to have given a lecture on Art. It appears that Prange published The Sixtine Madonna, by Raphael' : a paper read before the Liverpool Art Club, January 31st, 1876 / by F.G. Prange. He also wrote Specification of Francis Gerard Prange and William Whitthread: Utilizing Sewage. Published in 1870. This is held at the Wecome Institute who have also stated that : "Francis Gerard Prange, of Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, merchant, and William Whitthread, of the same place, analytical chemist". Same person or different people with exactly the same name? Appears to have been born circa 1843 in Liverpool. Interesting character. Seller Inventory # 021884
