James Sloan, a college art student on a summer fellowship, explores the New York art scene while living with his mother in her city apartment
Reviews
YA James, an art student at Amherst College, goes to New York after winning a summer fellowship. Moving in with his mother, who loves James but prefers to live alone, he sets about trying to maximize this chance to establish a firm link with the art world. Average in talent, James is noteworthy because of his ordinariness, and many high-school students will recognize and identify with him as he struggles to find his way. However there is nothing average about Spring's use of the language. His writing is clever, clear, and direct. He has a real skill with phrases and metaphors, but his writing remains completely approachable. In addition, he has a good eye for description, detail, and nuance. An exciting first novel.
