This highly acclaimed two-volume work tells the full story of General Spears¿ mission as Churchill¿s representative with the French Government in 1940. Volume one covers their visit to the Maginot Line in 1939 where they meet General Georges and discuss the coming conflict. The author goes on to describe the fall of Chamberlain¿s government in London, and conferences and interviews in France with Reynaud, Petain, Weygand and Darlan, helplessly watching the rape of France. Here also is Churchill in his finest hour. This volume ends as the German pincers are closing on the British and French armies at Dunkirk. Volume two continues the author's terrifying story of all he saw happening in France after Dunkirk and the fears of his first volume are realised in his second with the Maginot Line being overrun. He covers the final scenes in Bordeaux and then the story ends with the author's rescue of de Gaulle to England in his plane.
