About this Item
The first edition of this uncommon work by Sir William Willcocks, a British civil engineer during the peak of the British empire. An irrigation engineer, Willcocks proposed and built the first Aswan Dam, which is the subject of this work. With five folding plates. Collated, complete. Multi-lingual, with the initial work in English followed by a French translation and an Arabic Translation. This work discusses Willcocks' decision to build the first Aswan Dam, a gravity masonry buttress on the Nile River. Nothing of this scale had been attempted let alone built before this, and at the time of completion it was the largest masonry dam in the world. It was also the first true storage reservoir on the river. Willcocks originally delivered this work as a lecture at a meeting of the Khedivial Geographical Society, Cairo on the 16th January 1904. In the publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Light rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Stamp to the recto of front endpaper and to the title page, R and R Limited. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Just the odd spots. Very Good Indeed.
