An incredible, nearly complete set of this monthly periodical which launched in 1890, edited by English astrologer and theosophist, Alan Leo (1860-1917). First calledThe Astrologer's Magazine,Leo changed the name toModern Astrology,after the first five volumes, in 1895.Its stated object was to "thoroughly purify and re-establish the ancient science of Astrology. Through planetary symbology, it seeks to explain the ONE universal spirit in its varied manifestations." Leo and his magazine which ran continuously all the way until 1940 helped revive the science in England, Europe, and America. Gardner in hisCatalogue Raisonné.which was published while the magazine was still well in print, states "it is one of the best modern publications of the kind we have." These bound volumes contain all issues published between 1890 and 1904, EXCEPT July-December, 1901, or volume X ofModern Astrology,which is lacking from this set. Various shades of cloth ranging from drab olive to green, gilt lettered and decorated spines, and ruled boards. Diagrams, illustrations, charts, tables. Generally very good with a few scattered loose leave, occasional marginal chipping and toning, former owner's inscription and annotations in several, with a few ephemeral items tucked in here and there.
